Blog: When Tight Spaces Are No Longer Too Close for Comfort

May 12, 2025 –

How to do more with less space

Today’s price per square foot for commercial real estate is high on the radar of companies with storage concerns, given how costlyRaymond-9700-swing-reach-turret warehouse space has become. It is not just about gaining as many pallet positions as possible. It is about freeing up space to grow valuable production areas and revenue-generating operations.

One way to accomplish this is to narrow the storage aisles to 66 inches and ensure you are utilizing the full vertical footprint with your top load beam. Now you may be asking yourself, how will I retrieve pallets in that tight space? Well, ask no more. Raymond’s line of Swing Reach trucks can easily accomplish that task.

The industry leader in narrow aisle storage

Depending on load length, Raymond Swing Reach trucks can operate in very narrow aisles with a minimum of 66 inches and a maximize of 86 inches. More specifically,

  • The 9600 model can lift a base capacity of 3,000 pounds and can reach an elevated height of 394 inches.
  • The 9700 model can also lift a base capacity of 3,000 pounds with an elevated height of 514 inches.
  • The 9800 model can lift a base capacity of 2,500 pounds to 50 feet, and 3,300 pounds to 30.Swing reach truck operator harnessed

These trucks can also double as an order picker. Operators with a harness can pick cartons at height, then build a pallet. It is the best of both worlds!

Smart navigation

Swing Reach units are automatically guided through narrow aisles by a wire guidance system built into the lift truck, along with a wire buried into the aisle floor.

Wire guided swing reachThe wire in the floor emits a signal at 5.2 MHz or 6.25 MHz that the sensor on the truck receives. This guidance system allows the operator not to worry about steering while in the aisle. They only need to be concerned with forward and reverse travel and lift functions. Once the operator is ready to leave, they need to travel to the tunnel aisle or end of aisle, then disengage from the wire by way of a button and then proceed to make their turn. The Swing Reach trucks require 13 to 14 feet of end-of-aisle space for turnaround. Once the vehicle is at the front of the aisle, the operator engages the wire guidance button and enters the aisle, where the swing reach lift acquires the wire guidance frequency and automatically engages the steering.

Typically, wire guidance and racking systems are installed in the warehouse at the same time.

Swing Reach Trucks Intelligent features

The Raymond Swing Reach trucks aren’t just space savers. They are energy-efficient performance machines with fantastic features, including:

  • ACR system provides quicker acceleration, electronic braking, and faster lift and lower speeds to save energy. Regenerative lowering creates power by returning energy to the battery when lowering a load.
  • Longer battery life with full shift performance in most applications, with a smaller battery than the competition. Equip the truck with a Raymond lithium-ion battery with an 8-year warranty to maximize your investment.
  • Intellispeed ™ optimizes travel speed at height.
  • Reach-fork pantograph carriage design allows the truck to operate in narrower aisles than competitors’ offset fork designs.
  • Convenient service access and fewer parts to service and replace equate to lower operation costs.
  • Articulated steering lets the operator navigate between aisles in under 10 seconds using a transfer aisle up to three feet narrower than non-articulated trucks.
  • Ergonomic cabin, spacious operator compartment, intuitive controls, and an open-view mast design give the operator unobstructed visibility when operating the lift.

Another option to save space and labor

The Raymond Automated Transtacker is a swing reach turret truck that works in very narrow aisle warehouses. Unlike other Swing Reach models, it has dual-mode capability. Its automated mode can handle full pallet handling or switch to manual mode for case picking. Get labor and space savings benefits of an ASRS with the flexibility to change aisles using manual mode. Plus, the Transtacker can operate in your existing infrastructure.

If you want to maximize your pallet positions and storage capacity, the Raymond Swing Reach line of lifts is a great solution. Contact your local account manager to see how you can unlock more storage capacity from your existing space.
