The time has finally come when I am going to conquer my 25-year fear of flying officially, starting with a short flight to New York City. I know you are all thinking…25 years! How can someone go that long without flying? Well, let’s say that I originally didn’t fear flying. When I was young, I wanted the window seat to look outside as the plane elevated from the runway and sailed above the clouds like a majestic, winged bird.

Unfortunately, my feelings about flying changed when I was on a plane with mechanical issues. Twenty-five years ago, I was returning from a relaxing golf trip in Myrtle Beach when suddenly, just before landing, the plane rocketed back up in the sky. Frantically, or at least it seemed like it, the pilot came on the speaker and said that a light came on, indicating the landing gear was not locked. I looked back and never saw so many people as pale as a ghost. After circling, we made another attempt and landed without issue. Then the fun began as police and firemen drove on the tarmac to remove a passenger who was having a heart attack. Once the attendants gave the green light to disembark, 100 disheveled and sweaty passengers wedged their way through the plane door and migrated like cattle directly to the bar.
