Shelving is a common method for storing cartons, totes or individual pieces of product. It is comprised of vertical posts and shelves, and are most commonly designed to hold a few hundred pounds per shelf. Most shelves have a depth from 12"-36", and a width from 3'-6'. Since the loads stored on shelving units are most often handled manually, most shelving units are no greater than 7' high, although they can be made taller when needed.

Wide span shelving is a term describing heavy duty shelving that is designed for handling more weight across greater shelf spans and, usually, at greater heights. Wide span shelving can store 1,000lbs. or more per shelf, and are configured with widths of 8'-12'.

Wide span shelving is also capable of elevations as high as 20' and is often used in tandem with Orderpickers or other lifting devices elevating the picker to access the top shelves.
